SKATING ACROSS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FOR MOURNINGSTAR

4 02 2011

Kevin Hanley, 18, and Michael Kearns, 19, both of Apple Valley and both Granite Hills High School grads, recently skateboarded 130 miles from Norwalk to San Diego to prepare for a 200-mile fundraiser for The Mourning Star Center. It took them four nights and five days to complete the trip. It wasn’t spontaneous; they planned the journey thoroughly and had the fitness. The teenagers each captained the Granite Hills swimming and water polo teams. Hanley, who earned the honor of Eagle Scout in High School, has backpacked various mountains including Mount Whitney. The trip to San Diego was part of a bigger plan. Hanley and Kearns want to go on a 200-mile trip this Summer to raise money for kids who are grieving the loss of their loved ones. Having lost his own father at age 11, Hanley was an active volunteer in High School for The Mourning Star Center in Victorville. He served as a peer counselor at the center, which supports grieving children. Kearns also joined him at the nonprofit agency. “Mourning Star is so special for me because it took the worst event that occurred in my life and changed it into a positive force for other kids,” Hanley said.
